Reflections and aphorisms by Mihaela CD – a starting page towards philosophy or the „pollen of thought.”

Preface

This volume, also translated into English, authored by Mihaela CD, a talented and prolific writer and cultural promoter, with outstanding merits in promoting Romanian culture in Canada and across the world, follows the Latin dictum „Cogito, ergo sum!” encompassing a conception of life, existence, and love foreign to the author. Being an exponent of this world that oscillates between good and evil, the writer gathers her thoughts, feelings, sometimes situating them between „to be or not to be.” The book is structured into 17 chapters, exploring various themes and opening with the aphorism of Alexander the Great, „Nothing is impossible for the one who tries,” chosen by the author to alert us from the beginning to her audacity in approaching this literary genre or as an encouragement for courage in all fields. Emil Cioran stated in a discussion with Petre Țuțea that aphorism is the seed from which philosophy sprouts. Aphorism (from the Greek αφοριζειν aphorizein, meaning to delimit, hence aphorismos, definition) is a concise, expressive, and memorable statement that contains a reflection, a profound thought, or an opinion about life, with relatively general applicability. The terms maxim, adage, and sentence are used with the same meaning. Unlike proverbs, which have an ancient and popular origin, the author (writer, philosopher, politician, etc.) of aphorisms is generally known, as well as the circumstances in which they were written or spoken.

The aphorism is the expression of a complete thought that distinguishes itself, above all, by its originality and carries a profound meaning. The main characteristic of the genre is conciseness, which makes such expressions easy to remember. Aphorism is a means of communication with the reader that is faster and more convincing than poetry and philosophy. Aphorism is a novel from which the epic has been eliminated, or the aphorist is the servant of thoughts and the master of words, as wise men think about this species.

Concerned with the human condition and the multitude of emotions experienced throughout life, Mihaela CD seeks the facets of humanity to give them a single form, that of love. The words of wisdom in this book are drops of eternal truth. She explores human nature, trying to guide it on the path destined to make humans happy. And how can one be happy? Only by loving, of course. This fact also explains the words of the editor Johnny Ciatlos-Deak: „…it is a source of inspiration and motivation for anyone facing moments of uncertainty, fear, or disappointment.”

The author encourages introspection, towards that „Nosce te ipsum!” that could make people know the intrinsic world from which many are deprived. In a crooked and petty world, humans tend towards masks, towards roles that suit them, trying to appear as what they cannot be („Man has reached the highest peaks, and so can you! Keep going, don’t stop until you reach the destination point where you wanted to arrive!”).

Aphorisms reveal Mihaela CD’s longing for the freedom of gender and thematic creativity, the taste and application for fragmentarism, and the fruitful utilization of momentary inspiration, cultivating the spontaneity of intermittent notes. Ultimately, in her aphoristic writings, the author highlights her talent for felicitous expression, verbal grace, and concentrated ideas capable of achieving simpler and more direct communication, targeting a broader audience than those interested and knowledgeable in philosophy: „Your dignity is the most valuable thing, don’t let your guard down under any circumstances.”

Measured wisdom, graceful formulation, and economical suggestions filled with harmony make the author feel a sense of communion with archaic, mythological beings, as she is convinced that aphorisms were not invented by humans but by the Wisdom of the Earth, for „the most valid aphorisms have the tone of an incantation. They are bewitching thoughts,” as Blaga said. From here arise a series of defining observations that often transform into admonitions and demands to guide the author’s skill in aphorisms: „Use time in your favor because every moment of your life belongs to you!”

By its very nature, aphorism hovers between formulation and allusion and is naturally followed by the technical rule. „Every aphorism must be formulated in a way that says more than it says,” wrote Blaga. However, when formulating an aphorism, you must bring it to the point of refusing any addition. An aphorism must be something canonical, conclusive, like the Bible. Only then, when it comes from the hand of a skilled and gifted craftsman, will it fulfill its purpose—both lyrical and magical, as we discover in Mihaela CD’s book: „Even if the venom is coated with honey, it kills just the same.”

On the other hand, an aphorism has an air of self-evidence only when it expresses a hypothesis of the heart. Its state of grace and transparency excludes the presence of any complicated construction of the mind or the grinding noise of the intelligence machinery. A simple heartbeat miraculously encapsulates a delicate universe within a crystal. An aphorism is a mere grain of noble metal or a seed of a rare plant, yet it carries the weight of a world: „The smile is reflected in the other’s eyes like the sun is reflected in the water.”

Blaga defends his own temptation and concludes: „Aphoristic literature—in its state of natural, indispensable, seemingly insignificant but necessary seasoning—is the salt of thought.” And I say that Mihaela CD’s aphorisms and reflections are the „pollen” of thought from a talent in full bloom, while Lucian Blaga describes it as: „A flower in a state of grace. Chosen to conceive Logos and give birth to it.”
