The book by writer and cultural promoter Mihaela CD, which I received from Montreal, published by Globart Universum Publishing House in Romanian and English, „Questions for Later”encompasses a colorful palette of aphorisms, wise phrases, and philosophy,accompanied by suggestive images that subtly complement the author’s talented written texts.

The aphorism signed by Mihaela CD that opens the volume informs us about the author’s curiosity to discover the secrets of existence in various fields, explained through expressions of wisdom: „Curiosity is an integral part of discovery!”

The choice of Albert Einstein’s aphorism provides us with the answer to the book’s title: „The important thing is to never stop asking questions.” (Albert Einstein)

The first chapter, „Be Curious,” is an encouragement, advice, valid for all ages. „Get rid of the idea that being curious is a bad thing.” This is a truth proven throughout history. Great scientific discoveries have been made through curiosity. It is the interactive characteristic of a being that spontaneously explores its surroundings and seeks changes in its structure or dynamics. True curiosity arises from the desire to elevate one’s level of knowledge and skills. It is what drives us to learn new things that help us progress. When we are curious, we seek information with pleasure, and motivation is intrinsic, activating the area of the brain involved when receiving an external reward. The author emphasizes that this quality is not a defect but rather a quality when used proactively. Mihaela CD rightfully urges us, „Don’t wait for the universe to come to you and crown you with laurels! Go, be curious, and explore it to crown your own discoveries.”

The call in the chapter „Be Smart” is an optimistic call for a person in all mental capacities. Intelligence, according to the dictionary, is a verb that encompasses intelligence, acuity, resourcefulness, cleverness, ingenuity, skill, and understanding. These are aptitudes acquired through birth, genetics, but also through study. The author encourages us, even if we possess these aptitudes, to be disciplined and, above all, organized: „Being intelligent is pointless if you are not organized!” There is also a risk of „Sometimes, by seeking too many solutions, you miss the correct answer.” The solution being the way to solve a difficulty, a problem, or to overcome an impasse, etc.

Another chapter containing advice is „Seek Answers.” But what are answers? They are synonymous with solution, resolution, news, information, response, reply (in Latin, „responsum”). The author wisely responds: „For some questions, you will only find the answers after going through the trials and tribulations of life.” But what are the trials and tribulations of life? They are the joys and, above all, the troubles we experience throughout our lives. It is what causes us physical or moral suffering, trials, and difficulties. In this sense, to sweeten our existence, Mihaela CD urges us, „Live your life amidst beauty, scents, and melancholy, like the dance of the flame of a scented candle,” because „Sometimes, small gestures create grand emotions!”

The call in chapter 6, „Learn,” reveals a parental advice and urging: „The path of life is not strewn with rose petals, but you can plant them and nurture them to beautify your life.” Life itself is a lesson: ” All life experiences are lessons we have to learn! Life, derived from the Latin word ‘vivitia’ < ‘vivus’ meaning ‘alive,’ is a complex of properties and functions of organisms.”

„Every key you touch moves a string of the soul.” The soul, in most spiritual, philosophical, and psychological traditions, represents the immaterial essence, mortal or sometimes immortal, of a person or living thing. The Bible does not clearly present the nature of the human soul, but by studying how the word „soul” is used in Scripture, we can draw some conclusions. Simply put, the human soul is the part of a person that is not physical in nature. It is the part of every human being that remains eternal after the body experiences death. Genesis 35:18 describes the death of Rachel, the wife of Jacob, saying that she named her son „as her soul was departing.” From this, we know that the soul is distinct from the body and continues to live after physical death.

The human soul is at the center of a person’s personal identity. As C.S. Lewis said, „You don’t have a soul. You are a soul. You have a body.” In other words, personal identity is not based on having a body; rather, a soul is necessary. Mihaela CD encourages us to be ourselves and not play according to others’ tunes. To be independent: „Learn to sing YOU, not to dance as others sing!” And „The books you read will propel you to the highest peaks of knowledge.”

In Chapter 10, the author addresses youth, which she considers to be a fleeting flower. But „Sincere love in youth will endure until old age if we know how to take care of it.”

Mihaela CD’s aphorisms are concise, expressive, and memorable statements that contain a reflection, a deep thought, or an opinion about life, with relatively general applicability. The term „aphorism” comes from the Greek word „aphorizein,” which means to delimit. An aphorism is the expression of a complete thought that stands out, above all, for its originality and carries a profound meaning. The main characteristic of the genre is conciseness, making such expressions easy to remember. Aphorism is a means of communication with the reader that is faster and more convincing than poetry and philosophy. However, as Cioran said, it is the seed of philosophy’s beginning, and Mircea Eliade referred to them as „drops of wisdom.”

The wisdom in Mihaela CD’s aphorisms soothes the soul primarily through thoughts. If this did not happen, the quintessential human would stagnate, and the state of restlessness caused by ignorance of the surroundings would break any relationship between the self and the material universe, between the physical individual and the universal individual. Life, purely human, encompassing understanding existence, the reason for living, and the morality of relating to the environment, would not have human meaning if it were not based on wisdom.

Everything culminates in the fact that by gaining wisdom, accumulated over time through suffering, individuals are empowered to have realistic thinking, express their thoughts through a multitude of correct words, and, last but not least, exhibit righteous behavior framed within an honest and virtuous morality. Wisdom always resides in the hearts of those who constantly desire, through the sufferings of thought, to accumulate and spread knowledge. The writer states that „A passionate man never gives up!” or „The intelligent person is far too busy building, while the foolish one is busy tearing down!”

Reading this wisdom-filled book, I thought about the author, her thoughts, the turmoil that passes through her „Cell of God” (memory), the responsibility of being a wife and mother, and I remembered Victor Hugo’s aphorism: „You cannot prevent the path of thoughts, just as you cannot stop the waves of the sea from returning to the shore.” Just as the sea maintains an almost perfect balance between its shores, as Hugo reminds us, and Mihaela CD’s aphorism tells us a truth: „Children are the mirror in which we see our own lives.”

The accumulated knowledge demonstrated by the author of this book becomes sublime when a wise person can handle various situations without ever thinking that they cannot solve the problem that may arise. It does not necessarily become part of the individual through learning, but is accumulated much more deeply based on the power of understanding life by that person. We can always transmit the knowledge learned from others, but this does not mean that we automatically become wise.

Mihaela CD’s aphorisms are the result of the accumulation of multiple life experiences and culture. Thus, she generates knowledge within ourselves that can become strength and learning for others. Often, wisdom is much more beneficial when you transmit it to others through advice, thoughts, and aphorisms than when you try to help yourself.

Referring to the notion of cleverness, we observe that the definitions given by DEX (Romanian Explanatory Dictionary) for this concept interfere semantically with the definition given for wisdom, as cleverness represents „The faculty to easily and deeply understand phenomena, things; mental acuity; intelligence,” as well as with the definition given for intelligence.

Thus, INTELLIGENCE, which we discover in the writings of Mihaela CD, represents the ability to easily, well, and QUICKLY understand, to grasp what is essential, to solve new situations or problems based on previously accumulated experience, primarily dealing with the speed of information processing – ideas viewed as the material of thinking processes. For intelligence, it is not so much the volume or quantity of information processed in the crucible of the intellect that matters, but especially the speed at which these intellectual processes occur.

I conclude with a tribute to the writer Mihaela CD with my own aphorism, a sign of appreciation for her work: „Even if life is not always rosy, you have been given the chance to color it! Seize it!”

The implementation of the „6 Books for Romania – 2023” project has begun. As announced at the end of last year, it involves the creation of 6 new books by writer Mihaela CD and her collaborators from Globart Universum Publishing in Montreal. The aim of the project is to donate a significant number of books to libraries in Romania. As we previously mentioned, the demand is very high, but libraries lack the necessary funds.
